Filled Under:

Do's And Dont's For Pedestrian

Do’s

Use footpath where available
Where footpath is not available, walk on the right side of the road so that you face the traffic and can safeguard yourself from the approaching vehicles which are visible to you. (Walking on left side of road means traffic approaches from behind you and hence not visible to you)
If there are children with you, keep them on your side which is away from traffic (on your right side if walking on right side of road and on your left side if walking on the left side of the road)
Hold any heavy or protruding baggage in the hand which is away from traffic side.
Watch out for hindrances on the path - sudden change in level, step, steep ramp, surface irregularities, open manhole covers, large gaps in manhole grill cover where your foot can get stuck, slippery material, spilled liquid etc.
Watch out for sudden appearance of vehicles at blind corners.
Take extra care when stepping on carriageway of road where parked vehicles or obstructions block view of oncoming traffic
Watch out for vehicles changing direction suddenly without warning, especially auto rickshaws, 2-wheelers and buses
Watch out for 2-wheelers which may enter the footpath, especially at congested junctions.
When talking on the mobile or with others, stand at the inner side of pedestrian path without blocking the passage of other pedestrians
Wear lighter shade (white/off-white) clothes (at least shirt/top) which would be visible in the dark in case you have to walk in the late evening in areas which are not well illuminated.
Observe road safety norms and traffic discipline.
Report any unsafe conditions or obstructions on footpath to respective PMC ward office
Cross only at designated zebra crossings at road junction
Follow pedestrian signal where provided
Wait for traffic to halt on RED signal before crossing
Keep an eye on approaching traffic from other directions which may have GREEN signal
Follow the shortest straight path to cross the road (not angular or diagonal path as it takes longer time to cross)
Wait on the pedestrian refuge where provided if you are midway on road when traffic begins to move
Where refuge not provided, stand at road center near road divider and watch out for vehicles taking U-turn or right turn
When crossing at intermediate locations without signal, judge anticipated time for crossing as per your walking speed and distance to be covered and avail suitable opportunity to cross the road only when there is break in traffic flow
Preferably wait for a while and cross in a group rather than alone as there is safety in numbers
Always first look right and cross halfway when vehicles are not in the vicinity. Then look left for approaching vehicles and cross the other half
Give moving hand signal to approaching vehicles if you are stranded midway on road
Help children, senior citizens, the infirm and disabled to cross the road.
Cooperate with the Traffic Police/Wardens
Report any unsafe conditions on crossing to respective PMC ward office or Traffic police
Start early from home so that you will reach in time.

Dont’s

Do not expect speeding vehicles to halt suddenly to let you cross the road. 10. Do not cross at locations where approaching traffic is not visible or you may not be visible to driver of approaching vehicle.
Do not run while crossing. Also do not walk slowly when crossing.
Do not cross when using mobile phone or talking with others.
Do not cross road by jumping over road divider or squeezing through unauthorized openings in the divider.
